Dublin, Ireland – Sept.23 2020 – Shimmer Research, a global leader in wearable technology for research applications, saw its Verisense™ wearable sensing platform for clinical trials feature in a peer reviewed paper, IEEE XPLORE presented at the 2020 31st Irish Signals and Systems Conference (ISSC) in June, in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal.

The paper titled ‘Preliminary investigations of the agreement between two wearable accelerometers for use in clinical studies’ led by a cross-functional team at the Letterkenny Institute puts the spotlight on characterisation of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in ambulatory settings. Using Shimmers Verisense sensor, which was built from the ground up to monitor clinical trial participants’ activity and sleep levels remotely, the research explores the potential correlation between two activity trackers – Verisense Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and the Philips Actiwatch 2 wrist worn monitor.
Findings from the preliminary investigations show that the Verisense provides activity levels comparable to what some in the industry outline as the gold-standard the Actiwatch 2, further verifying the application of Verisense in large clinical studies.

Further research is now planned to extend the data gathering component of the study and the comparative techniques listed in the paper adding to the growing body of literature on the use or Wearable sensors for activity monitoring.
